My Story and My Motivation
When I was younger, my grandmother Eileen used to take us to Broadway shows. On July 26th, 2017, we had plans to watch 'On Your Feet' in the heart of New York City. We hailed a yellow taxi, and as we got out, the hustle and bustle of the city engulfed us. The sights and sounds of the crowd were overwhelming. I held my mother's hand tightly as we made our way through the crowd, trying to avoid getting lost in the sea of unfamiliar faces.

As we approached the theater, I tripped, and my mother's arm yanked back to keep me from falling. That is when I noticed something that made my heart sink. Sitting on the dirty sidewalk was my first cousin, begging for money. My mother had always taught me not to stare at people, because it was considered rude, but I could not help but stare. The moment I made contact with my relative, my blood, what I once wished was my older sister, on the floor begging for coins, heavy emotions drowned me. I jolted my mother's hand, squeezing and tugging her harder and harder, "MOM," progressively getting louder and louder. "MOM!" I shed a tear. My mother turned to see her niece, homeless and alone in Manhattan.
Never had I imagined witnessing my cousin, someone with whom I had celebrated countless Christmas Eve together, opening gifts together, and now, just a few years later, she was sitting down with legs crossed, a Poland Spring water bottle by her side, holding a cardboard sign that read "Homeless Please Help." Seeing her in that devastating condition left me with a flood of questions: "Where has she gone? Is she okay? What happened to her? Why did she want to run away from me? Did I do something wrong? I want to help her. How can I help?"

This is my mission. I founded FreshStartKits because I promised myself I would do everything possible to help people experiencing homelessness and those in need. The image of my cousin, homeless on the streets of Manhattan, fueled my determination. My first thought was to create a package containing essential items, something that could provide a fresh start for those who had fallen on hard times. I aim to distribute FreshStartKits so that everyone in need can access them, offering a helping hand and a glimmer of hope to those who have lost their way.
